The public lecture “No means No” is organized by HRSI within the 16 Days of Activism against Gender Based Violence campaign. The lecture seeks to address the rape culture through exploring the topic of “Rape in France: from the streets, through the bedroom, to the courtroom” and to examine how the principle of “No means No” is reflected in “the international human rights framework and standards on protection against domestic violence”. Too often in many societies women’s responses and body language are misinterpreted and given inappropriate connotations which perpetuate patriarchy and develop rape culture. At least one time in our lives, we all heard such examples: “if a woman says no, this means in fact yes” or “her smile was saying <yes>”. This has to stop, because “No means No” and a smile does not equal consent.
