21.6 million Women experience an unsafe abortion worldwide each year; 18.5 million of these occur in
developing countries from Eastern Europe, Latin America and Africa; (WHO, 2008). These data are not just numbers, they refer to human lives, and therefore they cannot be ignored. The legal approach to abortion is evolving from criminal prohibition towards liberalization. It comes from international and human rights framework. To address abortion as a human right and legal need represent an important step in dealing with health and reproductive issues that affect women in particular and to engage in a constructive political debate about the relation between abortion, demography and nationality.
